When we hear of artificial intelligence, we think of robots as novelty toys right?
Artificial intelligence (AI) can be used for more than just that.
Gartner defines AI in the following way: “Artificial intelligence applies advanced analysis and logic-based techniques, including machine learning, to interpret events, support and automate decisions, and take actions”.
In layman’s terms, AI can be applied to either a computer or machine to mimic “human intelligence” by programming it to respond to actions such as voice or images.
AI works through a ‘propensity model’ which uses algorithms and patterns to ‘learn’ to make decisions. The more iterations it goes through, the more refined it becomes to be able to make decisions rather than have predetermined responses as with traditional passive machines.
Machine learning and deep learning are typical methods used in AI.
Machine learning gathers and learns patterns from massive amounts of data and uses it to make suggestions on Facebook for example. Those popup ads that you see while you’re scrolling are no coincidence. Some of the data saved are your browsing history so if you’ve been eyeing a dress at Nordstrom, it’ll likely show up while you’re on Facebook or other platforms.
Deep learning is present in technologies like facial recognition or self-driving cars. It intends to imitate human recognition. It is programmed to search through data and ‘learn’ to recognize objects or people. With facial recognition, it measures the distance between a person’s facial features and then runs through all the stored data until it finds a match.
With self-driving cars, the more it goes through this process to learn, the more developed, precise, and improved the experience.
Siri and Alexa are probably the most well-known examples of artificial intelligence. When we ask Siri or Alexa a question, they understand the commands and can differentiate between others that may sound alike. We can thank the use of natural language processing technology for this capability. This technology uses the machine learning method to link speech to words and their meanings from audio.
